What to Bring Backpacking

Summer Hiking

Clothing
  • 1 pair trail shoes/hiking boots
  • 1 pair compression shorts/hiking underwear (no cotton)
  • 1 pair hiking pants (not cotton, zip-off legs)
  • 1 wicking T-shirts (not cotton)
  • 2 pair hiking socks (Smartwool two layer or socks with liners)
  • 1 pair camp underwear (can be cotton, comfortable)
  • 1 pair long pants (jeans weigh too much, I like pants from athletic suit)
  • 1 camp T shirt (can be cotton)
  • 1 fleece long sleeve pull-over
  • Rain jacket and pants
  • Stocking cap (spring, fall)
  • Hat to block the sun
  • Sunglasses (optional)
  • 2 bandanas
  • Camp shoes (water shoes, crocs, etc.)
  • Watch
  • Medium stuff sack to keep all unworn clothing in (pillow)

Equipment
  • Backpack
  • Sleeping bag (35 or 40 degrees, 2 pound)
  • Sleeping pad (blue pad, air mattress)
  • Backpack cover (or garbage bag)
  • Toilet paper
  • Body glide – small solid (optional but recommended)
  • Gold bond/baby powder (not medicated)
  • Tooth brush/paste (travel size)
  • Soap – Small bottle Camp suds (I have enough of this)
  • Baby wipes – travel size
  • Deodorant – travel size
  • First aid kit – small, include nail clipper, band aids, mole skin, pain reliever, antacid, diarrhea medicine, alcohol wipes, sewing kit, ace bandages, etc.
  • Hand sanitizer (small)
  • Duct tape (1-2 feed rolled around a pencil)
  • Small knife
  • Headlamp (fresh or extra batteries)
  • Water bottles (2 – one 32 oz Nalgene, other can be anything)
  • Water purification (REQUIRED: tablets or filter)
  • Bowl or plate (recommend bowl)
  • Spoon
  • Lighter
  • Trekking poles (optional – hiking stick works)
  • 2 extra gallon zip lock bags (for garbage and any other uses)
  • Food (packed either in the gallon zip lock bags or in a nylon stuff sack)
  • Small stuff bags or other bags to pack equipment into to organize your pack
  • Tent (can share with a buddy)
  • Ground cloth (can share with a buddy)
  • Stove (can share with a buddy)
  • Small pot
Winter Hiking

Clothing
  • 1 pair trail shoes/hiking boots
  • 1 pair tights or underwear (hiking)
  • 1 pair hiking pants (long or short)
  • 1 synthetic t-shirt (hiking)
  • 2 pair hiking socks & liners (hiking)
  • 1 pair boxer underwear (camp)
  • 1 pair long pants (camp, no jeans)
  • 1 cotton or synthetic t-shirt (camp)
  • 1 long sleeve base layer shirt
  • 1 pair long underwear
  • Fleece jacket (winter)
  • Rain jacket & rain pants
  • Waterproof winter gloves
  • Fleece/wool toboggan hat
  • Baseball cap (optional: recommended)
  • Sunglasses (optional: recommended)
  • 2 bandanas
  • Water shoes (i.e. Crocs)
  • Watch
